We all have seen the images of American soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners in unconscionable ways. Although the behaviour was inexcusable, it was not inexplicable to me because there were direct parallels with what I had seen in my Stanford prison study 35 years ago: guards stripping prisoners naked, putting bags over their heads, forcing them to do sexually degrading activities.
