In TV commercials and print ads, the car is always pictured in a wide-open space, apart from the crowd, preferably right after a rain so everything shimmers and at night with the city lights sparkling in the background. The gritty, maddening reality is that city cars spend much of their life bumper to bumper, fighting for every meter of forward movement. Wet pavement just means slower progress, but at least the night hides the soot-stained buildings and the exhaust haze.
