Ferries between Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire were for years the umbilical cord between England and Ireland. But in the recent competition for a new pier at Dun Laoghaire, the shortlist was dominated by Irish and American firms. Studio Libeskind and SOM were competing with Ireland's well-regarded and long-established Scott Tallon Walker and the country's bright young architectural stars Heneghan Peng. Heneghan Peng won. The Americans are not the only ones interested in working in Ireland. Catalan designer Elizabeth Gali is leading Cork's regeneration. MBM Arquitectes from Barcelona is working on plans for Dublin's Temple Bar and Santiago Calatrava has designed a bridge for the city.
