Break the cycle of environmental health disparities in vulnerable children

The environmental hazards of mining for coal and other minerals have formed the basis for developing the field of occupational medicine and safety. Apart from the physical hazards of working underground in cramped spaces, breathing in the dust, digging out rocks, and risking collapses, there was also the risk of tapping into underground sources of gases that could be colorless and odorless but deadly. To determine the presence of such gases, the miners would take little canaries in their cages into the mines. If the canary died, this would be a sure sign that deadly gases were around and that the miners had to hurry out of the shafts and into fresh air. This practice
