Pulmonary mycetoma-like lesion caused by Candida tropicalis

The saprophytic nature of the Candida species in the human respiratory tract obscures diagnosis of Candida pulmonary infections. Isolation of Candida from cultures in the respiratory tree may only represent colonization of the mucosa. Therefore, the definitive diagnosis of pulmonary candidiasis is based on demonstration of the fungus in lung tissue with associated inflammation. We report a case of Candida tropicalis pulmonary infection in a man with underlying neoplastic disease, and a radiological image of mycetoma-like lesion.
