In last month's column, I discussed zero waste (ZW) from the perspectives of guiding principles and public policies that are based on these principles. However, ZW doesn't have a meaningful impact until it has been put into practice and has demonstrated its effectiveness. For this month's column, then, I am looking at sites that illustrate how ZW practices can be implemented and the approaches that are being advocated for evaluating the results of these efforts. ZW can be practiced in any sphere of human activity but I decided to focus specifically on examples drawn from the business sector since, in many ways, it presents many significant constraints on how it can be incorporated. These constraints can span economic, human resource, logistical and spatial dimensions. On the other hand, demonstrations of how ZW can be implemented within business settings despite these constraints provide powerful evidence for its general feasibility.
