The biggest problem facing many MRFs is contamination from items such as plastic bags and garden hoses. The leaders of the IREP Montgomery facility, however, say their biggest challenge is stigma: "the false information and negative image of the 'dirty MRF' of old," as the company puts it. "This is an advanced mixed materials recovery facility, using the best technology available to maximize diversion and produce in-demand commodities including traditional recyclables and compost," said Kathleen Yonce, chief business development officer for Infini-tus Energy, which created the facility. "We are achieving excellent recovery rates and selling 100 percent of our materials at or above market pricing."
