Fort Pierce is located on the "Treasure Coast," named after the famed hurricane-caused sinking of a Spanish treasure fleet in 1715. According to local legend, treasure has been known to wash up on shore. Nearby, the St. Lucie County Single Stream Recycling Facility finds its treasure in the single-stream recyclables collected at the curb. The MRF processes materials from unincorporated St. Lucie County, the city of Port St. Lucie, the city of Fort Pierce and Martin County.
