This disclosure discusses a system for reducing carbon emissions from air travel through direct traveler interactions to minimize aircraft payload. The system relies on the notification of travelers about the carbon impact of per unit mass luggage load for their flight. The notifications will be aimed at influencing passengers to develop a habit of packing luggage more conservatively thus reducing luggage load and hence lower fuel burn. The system will be implemented as a piece of software that performs the following actions: 1.Calculate the expected carbon dioxide emission resulting from per unit mass of load for a particular flight based on historic data from load sheets of similar flights. 2.On flight booking, send a notification to the traveler informing them of the carbon dioxide emission resulting from per unit mass of load for that flight. 3.On flight arrival at destination, retrieve load sheet data for that flight to estimate the actual carbon dioxide emission resulting from per unit mass of load for the journey just completed. 4.After flight arrival, send a notification to the traveler of the carbon dioxide emissions saved by carrying luggage mass less than the total allocated weight for that traveler.
