If you look for newspaper articles about the Nevada Test Site, obituaries predominate. Started up in 1950, the Test Site it was created conduct nuclear experiments. What is the long term impact of radiation? What geologic impact do underground explosions have? What kind of effect does radiation have on livestock? Crops? The Test Site has been the workplace for up to 10,000 at its high water mark and the magnet for protesters throughout its history. An excellent brief history of the Test Site can be found in Lay (2007). Now the people who worked there, the protesters, and the scientists are all passing away. Their memories, though, live on through the Nevada Test Site Oral History Project, a collection of more than 200 oral histories.
