Construction began last month on the Nevada Test Site's $17.5 million Mercury Highway renovation project, and thanks to decreases in cost, an additional 12 miles of deteriorating roads at the test site will be repaved, according to National Nuclear Security Administration officials. National Security Technologies, LLC, the managing contractor at the test site, awarded a subcontract to Las Vegas, Nev.-based Frehner Construction to renovate 19 miles of the Mercury Highway in Areas 1, 5 and 6 of the test site, but because the price of asphalt has nearly been cut in half in the last year, an additional three miles through Mercury and nine miles in the northeast corner of the test site will also be renovated, Nevada Site Office spokesman Darwin Morgan said. Frehner Construction was rnawarded the subcontract Sept. 26. "We were going to do those in out-years, in future years, but because of the savings we got, it allowed us to get it done now," Morgan said.
