If it can take many decades, even centuries, to gather special collections for libraries, then so too can the process of producing and publishing catalogues of them sometimes be a long drawn-out process of many years. The origins of the collections covered by this catalogue go back to the first years of the twentieth century, collected from many disparate sources; the catalogue itself has its origins in the early 1970s, then from the early 1990s has taken up to 20 years to be published.
