Fare evasion costs the railway millions each year, and to combat it TOCs are using a number of weapons in their arsenals to beat the fare dodgers. Station ticket checks are now commonplace and automatic barriers are being introduced at more and more stations, especially in commuter areas.rnBut the ticket inspector - or the Revenue Protection Inspector (RPI) - is still the most effective tool to ensure passengers pay their way, and to give the best deal for their employees in recouping fares and dealing with situations.
