AREMA: Why did you decide to choose a career in railway engineering? BERNHARD: While I was finishing my first internship, I knew fairly quickly that I did not want to sit in an office and design various civil projects. I enjoyed being outside, working with my hands and being a part of tangible results, turning nothing into something. As I was finishing my engineering degree I had a professor at Iowa State that was involved in the rail industry and it sparked my interest.
