We regularly get the question: "What are these cars or locomotives worth?" Our answer is always: "It depends." It depends on the manufacturer. It depends on the car design. It depends on weight and volume limits. It depends on the unit's age. And most of all: It depends on condition! Option 1: Hire an appraiser. Regular readers of this column have heard me quote Pat Mazzanti of Railroad Appraisal Associates, Rail Solutions' Jim Husband, or Ed Biggs of Biggs Appraisal often as sources of information on equipment values. In my experience, each of these individuals will be happy to take a phone call (they're on the web), explain their services and the appraisal process and, if you catch them in a good mood, give you some informal views as to what your equipment may be worth.
