THERE'S a quiet revolution taking place in Liverpool. The city and its surrounding Merseyrail network is pioneering level access for wheelchairs from platforms to trains. Amid all the talk from the Department for Transport and others about 'Access for All', Merseyrail is getting on with it - at the behest of Mersey travel, the local transport authority under which the operator works. DfT's Access for All funding is making a difference on stations, with lifts and ramps allowing those in wheelchairs to move around stations. But it's done little - if anything - to bridge the gap between platforms and trains. Bridging this gap still leaves the wheelchair user reliant on a member of staff to lay a ramp and then help the wheelchair user ascend or descend it. Which isn't always easy. So, what has Managing Director Andy Heath and his team at Merseyrail done?
