More than 13,000 incidents of vandalism and trespass were recorded on the railway last year.rnThe figure includes at least 5,000 crimes committed by young people - just under 40 per cent of the total. More than 1,000 objects were thrown at trains and 1,181 objects placed on the tracks.rnThe cost to the industry has been put at £264m.rnThe figures were revealed to coincide with the relaunch of Network Rail's annual No Messing' campaign, fronted by the boxing champion Amir Khan, which is aimed at nine to 16-year-old children.rnCrimes during 2008 included dropping a wheelie bin from a bridge onto a train at Brockenhurst in the New Forest. Nearby at Eastleigh, shopping trolleys and a chair were laid rnon the line, while at Fratton in Portsmouth concrete slabs were dropped across the tracks.
