Development and introduction of digital ATC at East Japan Railway Company

In addition to the digital ATC, JR East is developing an even more innovative train control system called Advanced Train Administration and Communications System (ATACS). ATACS uses a two-way digital wireless communication system and corresponds to Level 3 of the ETCS that is being developed in'Europe. So far it has been tested on real trains and preparations are now under way for a long-term prototype test, scheduled to begin in the fall of 2003. JR East will continue its developmental work with a view to providing a safer and more reliable mode of transportation.
