Three major civil engineering contracts to build the new double-track viaduct through the Borough Market area, and undertake work at Blackfri-ars and Farringdon, are expected to be awarded from next month after bids were received by Network Rail's Thameslink project office to meet the January 25 deadline. A blockade is planned for the first week of June during which the terminal tracks at Blackfriars will be removed, allowing the east side of the bridge over the Thames to be cleared for structural work. This will be followed by a series of 51 h weekend possessions extending up to Christmas as track layout changes are made between Blackfriars and Herne Hill, where preparatory works have already commenced.
