Balcombe Tunnel failure

RAIB is now investigating the partial failure last month of a steel drainage structure located within Balcombe Tunnel on the Brighton Main Line. At 05.24 on September 23, the crew of an engineering train observed that the end of the structure had come loose and had dropped by about 0-5 m; emergency repairs required the Brighton Main Line to be closed for 22 h between Three Bridges and Haywards Heath, causing major disruption to Southern and FCC services.
