Structural failure analysis and proposed remedies for underground mining tunnels in third world countries The case of structural collapses of Merelani Small Scale Tanzanite Mining tunnels, Tanzania

摘要

The role of small scale underground mining activities in economy of third world countries where such mining activities are practiced is straight forward. However, among critical challenges that face this sector is continued structural failures of tunnel support systems which lead to fatalities and injuries to mine workers and loss or severe damages of high cost mining equipment. In this paper, this challenge is addressed by citing the structural failures of tunnels in Merelani Small Scale Tanzanite Mine, Tanzania as the case study from which respective remedies are also presented. In that regard, it is expected that, adaptation of the proposed remedies will significantly reduce or alleviate the said challenge and thus make small scale mining sector in third world countries safe and sustainable.
