The bad news was that two of the long awaited new-ones failed to materialise. In mid-July, Ken, G30CA, and Cezar, VE3LYC, arrived with all their gear and at great expense in the Cree village of Fort Severn in northern Ontario. Their plan was to head off for the Pen Islands (NA-231) with local guides hired from the village -but with departure only hours away the guides had second thoughts and decided that reports of large numbers of polar bears and walruses in the region last summer made the proposed trip too unsafe and called it off. This may well have been the correct decision but since the information it was based on must have been available to the local Cree for some time, one can imagine that Ken and Cezar were more than a little irritated by this last minute change of heart. It would seem that the Pen Islands must be tackled in the spring when the sea is still frozen and the dangerous wildlife is still out at the floe edge.
