What was the attraction of activating this island group? The Shetlands are the most northerly and dispersed island group in the UK. Having reviewed both my own previous UK IOTA contacts and the IOTA UK island popularity charts, they seemed an ideal candidate for mildly challenging solo operator DXpeditior They are listed as required by 30% of IOTA applicants, however, based on my experience this seems to be an underestimate.rnWhen compared with their closest neighbouring islands the Orkneys, the Shetlands are seldom heard on the HF bands, certainly on SSB. I had also been to the islands before and remembered having been impressed by their varied geography, fascinating Viking related history and the warmth of their people. I am pleased to report that none of these aspects have changed.
