Maybe the EU has, after all, done us a favour by prohibiting the manufacture of NiCad cells, although the latest I have heard is that this may have been postponed or possibly abandoned. The announcement of the prohibition further promoted the use of NiMH cells, which have been coming increasingly into common use. Unfortunately these cells have drawbacks, being less willing to provide high current flows and having higher internal resistance, along with a tendency to self-discharge to an annoying degree. It was inevitable that alternatives would be investigated and now, by good fortune, a promising alternative has appeared. It may indeed soon prove to outdo on all counts the batteries based on Nickel chemistry.
