Surviving Tunnel Fires

If ever there was a time to focus on improving fire safety in the nation's vehicular tunnels, that time is now. Over the past 4 years in the United States and in Europe there have been numerous serious tunnel fires with many deadly results. Consider the following: In October 2001, two trucks collided in the world's second longest road tunnel—the St. Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland; the resulting smoke killed 10 people. In November 2000, Austria's Kaprun Tunnel fire resulted in 170 deaths as a cable car burned out of control.
