At least six U.S. infrastructure departments received a "Special Achievement in GIS" award at the Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI) 12th annual convention. Recipients are nominated by ESRI staff, then reviewed and selected by ESRI President Jack Dangermond. Winners include: 1. The public works department of Newport News, Va. (see "Putting it all together," January 2008, page 44), which developed an enterprise asset management system that enables employees in one city division to see the details of projects other divisions have planned. 2. South Bend, Ind., whichtransitioned from paper to electronic mapping to help the city implement its stormwa-ter master plan. 3. The Navajo Nation DOT, which produces maps on 70,000 miles of roads for anyone who lives or works on the reservation or does business with the department.
