Program tests brains and brawn

A team of engineering students from the University of Nevada in Reno took first place in the American Society of Civil Engineers' 21st annual concrete canoe competition-otherwise known as the "America's Cup of civil engineering"-ending a five-year winning streak by the University of Wisconsin at Madison and earning $5,000 in prize money. Three-quarters of the winner's score is based on a technical design paper on the planning, development, testing, and construction of the canoe; the remaining 25% is based on a team's performance testing their design in sprint and endurance races.
