EU accession: history in the making?

Following the meeting of the European Council in Copenhagen last December, the candidate countries are one step nearer to EU accession. What are the implications of enlargement for Europe and for its struggling communications industry? The next era in European politics is due to begin in May 2004 when ten new member states are scheduled to join the European Union. The coming accession of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia represents a huge economic shift in Europe. With Bulgaria and Romania scheduled to join two years later, and accession talks beginning with Turkey in 2004, the political face of Europe will change permanently.
