Aassrec Convenes Its 17th Biennial General Conference In Japan

The Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (AASSREC) held itsrn17th Biennial General Conference in Nagoya, Japan on 27-30 September 2007. The conference focused on a very timely theme, Economic Development and Environmental Issues: Perspectives from Social Sciences. An active member of AASSREC, PSSC took part in the conference with PSSC Executive Director Virginia Miralao and Dr. Ruth Rico of the UP Department of Political Science and Philippine Political Science Association as official country representatives. Dr. Rico delivered the country paper entitled "The Goal and Sustainable Development: Issues, Challenges, and Prospects" where she examined the stakeholders' understanding of the concept of sustainable development, assessed the performance of the country vis-a-vis existing environmental policies and international commitments, and explored prospects for improving sustainablerndevelopment practices, focusing on the role of the state and societal actors.
