Renters locked out of home ownership by rising house prices may soon be helped on to the property ladder by a government-funded Rent to Buy scheme. Responding to the chancellor's request for bold Budget ideas, communities secretary Sajid Javid has reportedly called on the Treasury to underwrite £100bn to build at least 400,000 Rent to Buy homes over the next 10 years. Those who stand to benefit from the scheme are families and millennials unable to buy their first homes, alongside professionals such as police officers and nurses.
