Last September I wrote in Property Week of my love of places with soul, character and excellence of place - and criticised Leeds.Soon afterwards I received an elegant letter from Andrew Carter, the leader of Leeds City Council, inviting me to the Leeds architecture awards in January. He made no mention of my article but offered me the opportunity of a tour around Leeds with the civic architect John Thorp, an old friend. It seemed a good chance to reconsider my commentary and I duly arrived in Leeds. John and his able colleague, Susan Tuck, from the council's Renaissance Unit, took me on a three-hour trip around the city.
