London's great estates are busier than ever. The Crown Estate is investing heavily to transform St James's (p18) into the destination of choice for 'affordable luxury' operators and although it may be less high-profile - for the time being at least - Sloane Stanley (p28) is blooming in its Chelsea homestead, persuading international retailers to make their UK debut on the King's Road. The common thread that ties these two companies together is they decided to adapt to the changing business environment rather than accept the status quo. As a result, while some rival estate operators may have perished and others merely survived, these two have thrived.
