As part of the Communication Management Knowledge Area in the PMBOK® Guide, the collecting, analyzing, and reporting of metrics is fundamental for the monitoring and controlling aspect of any project. This is not just important for the project manager, but also for any stakeholder who is interested in the status of projects. There are two basic concepts that underlie Harold Kerzner's book, Project Management Metrics, KPIs, and Dashboards. First, it is about providing "the right information, to the right person at the right time …" Second, "you cannot correct or improve something that cannot be effectively identified and measured."
