The timeliness of The Organizational Resilience Handbook, by Graham Bell, is clear with an author's note titled "Resilience Thinking During a Pandemic," which was added prior to publication in 2020. In this note, the author describes the "unimaginable shock" of COVID-19: "The scale and velocity of this crisis can help us better appreciate the strategic nature of this subject." This statement is consistent with the approach throughout this book that resilience is a strategic strength (or weakness) within an organization. It requires more than preparation for isolated, tactical responses to attention-grabbing events. Bell writes, "The organizations which boast resilience will be those able to demonstrate strength and evidence growth, and those which reshape in order to secure a competitive position."
