2018 Drug Testing Index Sees Changes in Drug Positivity for Safety-Sensitive Workers

The rate of workforce drug positivity hit a 14-year high in 2018 according to an analysis by Quest Diagnostics. Substance abuse by the U.S. workforce can be a serious concern for companies, affecting healthcare and workers' compensation rates, absenteeism, productivity and judgment. Quest Diagnostics' Drug Testing Index showed several increases in drug usage for workers in safety-sensitive positions for whom routine drug testing is mandated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, such as pilots, rail, bus and truck drivers, or nuclear power plant workers.
