摘要

British Safety Council's (BSC) Time to Breathe campaign is raising awareness of the risks to outdoor workers from air pollution. According to research from King's College London, more than 9,400 people die prematurely due to poor air quality in London. In addition, ambient air pollution is linked to cancer, lung and heart disease, type-2 diabetes, infertility and early dementia. The campaign published a white paper to raise awareness of the risks of global ambient air pollution to outdoor workers, and to call for government adoption of exposure limits. The white paper, "Impact of Air Pollution on the Health of Outdoor Workers," summarizes available evidence about the causes and consequences of air pollution in Britain. The report reviews interna-tional examples of initiatives to measure air pollution in different locations and their recommendations for risk reduction. It calls for the U.K. to adopt the World Health Organizations (WHO) exposure limits for main pollutants and for the creation of a workplace exposure limit for diesel engine exhaust emissions.
