Gyrfalcon Tough enough for Aleutian wind and waves

The water in Dutch Harbor is usually not described as tranquil. But tranquil it was on a cool summer day in the remote Alaskan port that cuts into windswept and treeless Amaknak Island in the Aleutian chain. For the crew aboard the 105-by-34-foot z-drive tractor tug Gyrfalcon, calm is good, and rare. On leaving the harbor, everything gets stored out of the weather, said Capt. Chris Starkenburg. The tug has a generous area below deck in the bow devoted to storage for spare lines, bridles, spare equipment and food freezers.
