Redundancies can be emotional, upsetting and stressful - not only for employees, but managers, too. While dismissals of any sort are never pleasant, redundancies are usually linked to external circumstances -such as wider company restructuring or budget cuts. There can often be little done to prevent the situation, making it all the more agonising. Ian Ashman, lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, surveyed managers across the public and private sector to uncover their experiences. He found that most people who have had to break the news of redundancy or redeployment - people he calls "envoys" - considered it to be the most emotionally demanding thing they had undertaken in their working lives. The need for support in the role is widely evident in Ashman's report.
