I read with interest Blayne Pereira's articles Is company purpose a facade? and The heart of small business in the most recent edition of Professional Manager (Winter 2015, pages 38 and 52, respectively). In Pereira's first outing, he quotes Charles Wookey telling us that: "The true purpose of business is to solve problems and meet needs. Profit is the result and not the purpose." On page 53 the same journalist quotes economist Milton Friedman as having declared: "There is one, and only one, social responsibility of business, to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits."
