The recent spate of co-ordinated attacks on the world's biggest Internet sites is a worrying development for the television industry. Whether it was criminals, anarchists or just script kiddies who planned the attacks, they have shown that it's difficult to secure any large computer installation against intruders. So why should telly folk be worried? Well TV programmes are mostly made on hard disk and, at present, stored on tape. The problems will come when facilities and then broadcasters switch over to server-based storage systems which are linked to computer networks such as the BBC/AP Electronic News Production System. I'm not suggesting for one moment that ENPS, or any other facility, has been hacked but wherever there's a network with a phone line coming in there's a risk of attack.
