Perhaps unsurprisingly, as we are dealing with the internet, technology is moving faster than legislation in ensuring that content can be traced back to its source. Technology, most of it software-based, developed to combat infringement is known as digital watermarking or digital steganography. It involves embedding a hidden code or mark into a digital object, be it an image, a map, video, film or audio. "The technology is not failsafe," says Scott Parker, web producer at LGCnet -part of EMAP Esprit's Digital Services. "If you resize the image, for instance, you do run the risk of losing the code. But it does provide a degree of security."
