Unlike the pirates of old who plundered the ports and merchant vessels of the South China Sea, today's Chinese pirates are landlubbers all, operating from 30 high-tech factories that replicate optical discs. So it was fortuitous that Microsoft summoned the authorities quickly to a plant near Guilin in Guanxi Province, where investigators found 5,700 bootleg Windows CDs. The plant's four production lines-three working around the clock-could churn out 20,000 discs a day.
