For the first time, scientists know what lies within the colorful clouds of Jupiter—and they're surprised. In January, researchers revealed their preliminary analyses of data from the Galileo probe spacecraft, which plunged into the Jovian atmosphere on December 7. For 57 minutes, until it finally succumbed to the intense heat of Jupiter's interior, the probe radioed a mountain of data on the atmosphere's composition and structure, temperature, wind speeds, and lightning.
