Some devotees of the finer aspects of motorsport may still reject the idea that armchair driving is even possible. They're wrong. Three recent CD-ROM software titles prove it by authentically messing with your head, your eyeballs, and your adrenals. Only a year or so ago, motor racing simulations played on small computers were just a cut below the level of reality translation that's needed to bring off true involvement. Think about it: When we drive, we get our sensory cues not only from observing what's going on through the windshield, but from multiple sound sources as well—engine noises, tire skids, and those awful, telltale transmission rips. A digital simulation that coordinates and presents all this information comprised just too much code to blow through a home machine in real time. That is, until home machines grew into the job.
