QUICK TEST: HARBOR FREIGHT INFRARED GUN

We just picked up this handy little infrared thermometer from Harbor Freight (Cen-Tech PN 96451, $39.99) to do some troubleshooting on PHR's Project Nova. Now that the Nova is back on the road and summer's in full swing, we needed to know if our temp gauge was reading correctly. The cockpit gauge showed everything was running happily at 175 degrees, but with a plain-Jane reconditioned stock radiator, we were suspicious. We put the heat gun to the test; just pull the trigger and the built-in laser allows you to pinpoint the heat source you want to measure. With the engine running, we aimed it at the radiator end tanks, the water neck, the water pump, and the hoses, while checking the digital readout. All the readings fell in a narrow range between 170 and 180 degrees. It was a great feeling not to have to spend more dollars on the cooling system, at least for now.
