Four kinds of red phosphorous (RP) encapsulated differently were employed as flame retardants (F/R) to epoxy molding compounds (EMC) consisted of ortho-cresol novolac epoxy (EOCN) and phenol novolac (PN) resins in order to investigate the effects of encapsulating materials on the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of EMC formulations. It was found that RP particles encapsulated with resol resin (F/R-1) shows better flame retardancy than those encapsulated with melamine or TiO2. Further encapsulation of F/R-1 with EOCN has also been attempted with an idea to induce network formation between the matrix and encapsulated layer. It was found that further encapsulation successfully improves the interfacial adhesion between them and the mechanical properties are enhanced significantly. Hygrothermal stability of various RPs encapsulated differently were also investigated and the effects of encapsulation methods on them are discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd.
