Environmental licenses of Angra-3, spent fuel unit probed by prosecutors

Brazil's federal public ministry, the federal prosecutor known as MPF, has launched two separate civil actions against nuclear operator Eletronuclear that could result in the annulment of environmental licenses for the construction of the 1,405-MW Angra-3 and for a new dry cask storage facility for spent fuel. In an Oct. 9 statement, MPF said it has opened a public civil action, or PCA, against Eletronuclear, Brazil's environmental regulator, known as Ibama, and the national indigenous people protection foundation Funai to force the three parties to fulfil socio-environmental commitments listed in the preliminary license granted by Ibama for Angra-3.
