The University of Maine said Aug. 5 it will collaborate with RWE Renewables and a Mitsubishi subsidiary to develop a 10-12 MW floating offshore wind turbine demonstration project expected to be completed in 2023. "For generations, Maine has been a national leader when it comes to using our natural resources sustainably to create jobs, protect our environment and power our economy," Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden said in a joint statement. "The University of Maine's floating deep water offshore wind project carries on that tradition," the lawmakers said. Mitsubishi subsidiary Diamond Offshore and RWE formed a joint venture called New England Aqua Ventus (NEAV) that will own and manage all aspects of permitting, construction and assembly, deployment and ongoing operations for the project, the university said. The project will consist of a single semisubmersible concrete floating platform that will support a commercial 10 MW to 12 MW wind turbine deployed in a state-designated area two miles south of Monhegan Island and 14 miles from the Maine coast, IT SAID.
