Vertiwind and Winflo, two projects for floating offshore wind turbines

Two French projects for floating offshore wind turbines are in progress, one sponsored by the "Pole Mer Paca" competitive cluster and the other, by the "Pole Mer Bretagne" competitive cluster. While the two are relying on different technologies, their approaches are complementary. By eliminating the constraints associated with the foundations of stationary wind turbines, the new concepts offer new prospects for a second generation of offshore wind turbines, and project location will no longer be a function of the sea floor characteristics (e.g. submarine plateaus or shoals), but of balanced use, environmental concerns and achieving competitive energy costs.
