Evergy unveils 80%-by-2050 CO2 emissions reduction goal

Evergy Inc. on Thursday announced a new goal of cutting planetwarmingcarbon dioxide emissions by 80% by 2050 compared to 2005levels.CEO Terry Bassham unveiled the target during a third-quarterearnings call. "The trajectory and timing of our goal could be impactedby local and federal clean energy policies, but we continue to work withpolicymakers at all levels to ensure we can minimize our impact on theenvironment in a cost-effective way," Bassham said.Evergy, the product of a merger in 2018 between Great PlainsEnergy Inc. and Westar Energy Inc., has already reduced its emissionsby 40% relative to 2005 levels by adding more than 3,500 MW ofrenewables and retiring 2,400 MW of fossil generation since then, thecompany noted in an investor presentation. A 2008 statewide initiativerequires investor-owned utilities operating in Missouri to meet a 15%renewable portfolio standard by 2021.
